Geboren in Wien, studierte er an der Wiener Musikuniversität bei Carole Dawn Reinhart.

Weiterbildung bei Maurice André.

Sein solistisches Debüt gab er 1986 im Wiener Musikverein mit dem Trompetenkonzert von Armin Kaufmann.

Zahlreiche Tourneen führten ihn durch fast alle Länder Europas, in die Türkei, nach Malta, Korea, Japan, Brasilien, Nordafrika, China und in die USA. ntett in Sachen Jazz von Monaco bis Shanghai.

Er war Solotrompeter des „Barockensemble Vindobona“, danach 1. Trompeter der Neuen Oper Wien und der Wiener Kammerphilharmonie. Als Solist veröffentlichte er bisher 14 CDs in unterschiedlichen Musikstilen. Mehrere Komponisten haben Josef Hofbauer Werke gewidmet.

Neben seinen klassischen Auftritten tourt er auch seit Jahren mit seinem Quintett in Sachen Jazz von Monaco bis Shanghai.
