Der australische Geiger und Dirigent ist in Oxford/England geboren und wuchs in Melbourne/Australien auf, wo er Violine am Victorian College of the Arts studierte und mit einem Diplom abschloss.

Seit 1992 lebt Russell in Wien.

Von 1994 - 1996 war er Konzertmeister der Wiener Kammeroper.

Seit 1997 ist er Dirigent, Konzertmeister und Gründungsmitglied des Schönbrunner Schlossorchesters. Seine intensive kammermusikalische Tätigkeit führte ihn mit Tourneen unter anderem nach Indonesien, Kanada, Japan, Iran, England und in andere europäische Länder.

Als überaus erfolgreicher Stehgeiger tritt er auch mit dem Johann Strauss Ensemble regelmäßig im In-und Ausland auf und feierte mit diesem sensationelle Erfolge.

Russell McGregor spielt eine Violine von Carlo Giuseppe Testore aus dem Jahr 1697.
